Students Headed to Global and National Academic Competitions

Destination Imagination

A team of five 7th grade students from De Pere Middle School will take part in the Destination Imagination Global Competition to be held virtually in June. Anna C., Ainsley M., Asher K., Craig G. and Sam H. placed second at the state-level meet in the Improvisational category.

The team, known as the "Runaway Hamstens" has worked together on Destination Imagination projects since 4th grade. They are supported by District Enrichment Teacher Donell Bonetti, along with parent coaches.

Destination Imagination provides unique educational experiences across seven project-based Challenge types–Technical, Scientific, Engineering, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Service Learning and Early Learning. The organization operates in 45 states, 30 counties and typically engages more than 150,000 participants annually.

MathCounts

Jeremy L., a De Pere Middle School/Virtual Learning Academy 8th grader, is the first student in our District to qualify for the National MathCounts Championship. Jeremy placed 3rd out of 42 competitors at the state-level championship in late March. He and three other Wisconsin students will comprise Team Wisconsin at the 2021 National MathCounts Championship which is also being held virtually this year.

MathCounts was established in 1983. Its "Competition Series" cultivates talent in the nation's brightest young minds by bringing together students from all 50 states in a series of contests—the only math-focused competition program of its kind in the US.

Jeremy is coached by District Talented and Gifted Program Coordinator Chris Hendricks.
